To use the new features mentioned above, users need to update the software on both PS5 and TV.

Sony has just announced a number of features that are about to be integrated into BRAVIA XR TVs to optimize with Play Station 5 (PS5), including the Z9J, A90J, A80J, X95J and X90J TVs. Accordingly, these TVs will be equipped with two completely new exclusive features that support PS5 consoles: Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode.

Compare gaming images with and without Auto Genre Picture Mode support.

With Auto HDR Tone Mapping, the HDR feature is optimized immediately when the PS5 first boots up. PS5 will automatically recognize each BRAVIA TV model to select the appropriate HDR mode. With HDR tint levels optimized to each TV’s specifications, you’ll see important details and colors even in high-contrast scenes. For example, you will see more objects on the track in Gran Turismo to help calculate your next move.

Meanwhile, Auto Genre Picture Mode helps the BRAVIA XR TV detect whether you’re playing games or watching movies and TV shows. Specifically, the TV will automatically switch to Game mode when playing games to reduce signal latency and provide a smoother experience, or prioritize image processing for more outstanding quality in Standard mode when playing games. Watch movies via streaming services or Ultra HD Blu-ray discs on PS5.

The TVs in this update are supporting frame rates up to 120fps and 4K resolution according to the HDMI 2.1 standard with compatible games. In addition, with a signal latency of only 6ms on the Z9J series, Sony claims players will have a smooth experience and amazing responsiveness in first-person shooter titles, which can be sports.

To use the new features mentioned above, users need to update the software on both PS5 and BRAVIA TV. The update is expected to be released at the end of January 2022.
