A series of Kia’s ‘nail’ models enter Vietnam 2022

Truong Hai (Thaco) said it will distribute the Telluride large SUV, EV6 pure electric crossover and CUV Sportage CUV in 2022.

On October 10, within the framework of the launch event of new cars such as Sonet, Carnival, K5, there were also the appearance of new names such as Telluride, EV6, Sportage, Sorento PHEV. Nguyen Quang Bao, general director of Thaco Auto, said that all of the above models will be sold in Vietnam by 2022.

Kia EV6 (first) and Kia’s new car lineup appeared at the launch ceremony on October 9 in Chu Lai, Quang Nam.

These names are all key models in Kia’s global strategy. If the EV6 is the Korean automaker’s first electric car, the Telluride is a model aimed at the mid-size SUV segment, where there are many competitors in Vietnam. Finally, Sportage, a crossover with many charms to the Vietnamese market, previously stopped selling because of low sales, but the new product and design philosophy is helping this model gain a lot of attention in the world.

This is also the first time a car company in Vietnam announced the specific launch time of products before such a year. Usually, companies will want to keep information about new products private, so as not to affect the sales of other models, as well as trade secrets from competitors.

The three-row SUV Kia Telluride goes on sale by the end of 2022. The car is aimed at rivals such as Ford Explorer, Volkswagen Teramont, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. Meanwhile, the EV6 pure electric crossover is expected to be on the market by the end of the second quarter of 2022.

Kia Sportage is a C-class CUV that competes with Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V. The car uses a hybrid engine, sold from June 2022. In this segment, there are currently no cars equipped with hybrid engines.

The D-size SUV, Kia Sorento will have a plug-in-hybrid version, combining a 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor. The charging port gets power from a household source. The car is expected to launch in March 2022.

Among the new Kia models to be sold in 2022, only the Sorento is currently assembled by Thaco in the country. The company has not said how to distribute assembly or import with Sportage, Telluride and EV6. Kia in Vietnam currently focuses on assembling, no imported products, similar to the compatriot Hyundai, which is distributed by TC Motor (only for cars).

With the distribution of EV6, Kia is the third car company in Vietnam to clearly state its plan to distribute pure electric vehicles. Thaco has not yet announced its plan to install charging stations for customers’ vehicle use. Before Thaco, Vietnamese firm VinFast oriented to sell electric products from the end of 2021 (e34 model) and 2022. While Porsche brought back the luxury Taycan from the second half of 2020.

There are 3 more products for the first time sold in 2022, if other brands do not bring new cars, Kia becomes the second largest distributor in the market in terms of number of cars, 11 models. Toyota is still the company with the most extensive product range, 15 cars (including the upcoming Raize).

Excluding Peugeot with low sales, Kia is the car company with the highest growth rate in the Vietnamese auto market, 54%, in the first 8 months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020. Kia sold 25,411 cars after 8 months, currently ranked No. third in terms of sales, behind Hyundai (40,248 units) and Toyota (35,113 vehicles).

In Vietnam, most Japanese and American firms sell passenger cars in the form of imports and assembly, while two Korean automakers, including Kia and Hyundai, are purely assembled. Vietnam is also the largest contributor to the growth and market share of Korean cars for many years in Southeast Asia.
