Almost 50,000 cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours, the 5th wave continues to swell

Nearly 50,000 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 were recorded in 24 hours, as the fifth epidemic wave continues to sweep over France, according to the latest figures released Wednesday by Public Health France.

49,610 new cases have been confirmed, up from 47,177 the day before. Over the last seven days (which makes it possible to smooth out the effects of non-working days) the average of new daily cases stands at 34,547, against just under 22,000 a week ago, testifying to the acceleration of this wave.

The number of hospitalized patients exceeded 10,000 (10,558) for the second consecutive day (10,249 Tuesdays and 9,860 Mondays), a threshold that had not been reached since September 12. There were 992 new admissions in 24 hours, and the number of critically ill patients in critical care units reached 1,886, with 215 admissions in 24 hours. Since the start of the epidemic, at least 119,227 deaths have been recorded.

Regarding vaccination, since the start of the campaign, 51,995,422 people have received at least one injection (77.1% of the total population) and 50,911,159 people have a complete vaccination schedule (75.5% of the total population).

Since the start of the booster campaign, 8,165,008 people have received a booster dose. Booster injections have increased sharply since they were opened to all adults at the end of last week: nearly 485,000 people have benefited over the last 24 hours.
