AmericaThe white dust suddenly sprayed down from the ceiling, causing the entire gas station to become white.
The incident happened in July 2020 at a gas station in Quincy, Massachusetts, when the automatic fire extinguishing system failed, leaving the entire gas station as well as customers refueling cars covered in white dust. Fortunately no one was seriously injured, but the scene clearly shows what will happen when a similar fire extinguishing system is in operation.
If you enter a gas station, look up at the ceiling and see small nozzles like the photo below, which means this place is equipped with an automatic fire extinguishing system.
The system will include temperature sensors. When the sensor detects a fire, a signal is sent to the control panels, which then activate the chemical storage tanks that are usually left above the ceiling.
The system also incorporates a number of other safety measures such as automatically locking the fuel to not only put out the fire, but also ensure that the fuel will not continue to flow out.
Fire extinguishing agent is a dry powder extinguishing agent based on sodium bicarbonate (or baking soda) combined with an acidic ingredient to release carbon dioxide when heated.
