Bentley Bentayga uses the world’s largest carbon fiber rim

The luxury company took 5 years to develop 22-inch carbon fiber rims for the Bentayga super SUV.

On July 26, Bentley announced that it was working with Bucci Composites (Italy) to produce 22-inch carbon fiber wheels for the Bentayga. The rims will be offered through Bentley’s Mulliner branch from late 2021, and will be the world’s largest on a production vehicle.

Large carbon fiber rims not only make the SUV look more aggressive, but also reduce 6 kg per rim compared to normal. That is, the whole set of 4 rims will help Bentayga lose a total of 24 kg.

In the supercar line, carbon fiber rims are more common than the rest in the industry, with advantages in performance and braking efficiency, not only in terms of weight. A set of aluminum alloy rims of the same size can be tilted by up to one degree due to the impact of the rim, reducing friction. Thanks to the stiffer, the carbon rim is less prone to tilt.

The superior stiffness also helps to reduce tire wear. Tires will last longer thanks to a better supporting rim structure.

In particular, carbon fiber rims contribute to increased safety, according to Bentley. The British automaker says the rim has passed all the tests of TÜV – independent German and Austrian service companies that test and certify technical systems to reduce risk and prevent damage. .
