The public television channel France 4 is due to close in August, but Emmanuel Macron wants it “Pursue its mission” around youth and education, he said in a message posted on Twitter on Tuesday, May 18.
“Animation and education chain, France 4 has taken a special place in homes, especially since the pandemic”, writes the head of state, who continues: “I hope that it will continue its mission around two axes: youth during the day, culture in the evening, to extend the success of the Culturebox experience. “
The call of the senators to maintain the channel
For the sake of savings for France Télévisions, the government had initially planned to shut down France 4 in the summer of 2020 in favor of 100% digital programs. He then granted a one-year reprieve to the chain, acclaimed for its educational programs during the closure of schools last spring.
Opposed to its closure, 42 senators from the Senate Culture Committee signed on May 8 a column in the “Sunday Journal” calling on deputies to ” to confirm “ an amendment voted the same week by the upper house to perpetuate the youth channel.
In an interview with “JDD”, the president of France Télévisions Delphine Ernotte had said she was in favor of maintaining the youth channel, citing the digital divide. “If we want to reach all audiences, especially the youngest, then we need to keep this channel 14 and France 4”, she had estimated.
In a report published in January, the deputies Béatrice Piron (LREM) and Maxime Minot (LR) had also pleaded for the maintenance of a youth channel.
