Indira Gandhi had done espionage of daughter-in-law Maneka, friends’ phones were also tapped, claims in book

The opposition is attacking the government over the alleged spying through Pegasus. On Wednesday, MPs of 14 parties led by Rahul Gandhi took out a foot march from Parliament House to Vijay Chowk. This is not the first time a government has been accused of espionage. Earlier, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was also accused of spying. It was claimed that he himself had got his daughter-in-law Maneka Gandhi spied on.

Maloy Krishna Dhar, former joint director of IB, made several startling claims in his book ‘Open Secrets of Indian Intelligence Unveiled’. The book claimed, ‘Indira Gandhi was the first politician to get spying done. Indira Gandhi had asked the IB to keep an eye on the then President Giani Zail Singh. The conversation with Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala was recorded on the orders of Indira Gandhi and this recording was handed over to Indira. However, later Giani Zail Singh came to know about this and then he used to meet people outside only in the guard area.

MK Dhar further writes, ‘Indira Gandhi with her daughter-in-law Maneka Gandhi But also the IB was asked to keep an eye. All the friends of Maneka were spied by IB and their conversation was taped. Even Maneka’s mother was spied on. The editorial board of the magazine run by him was also spied on.

Pranab Mukherjee also made allegations of espionage: Former President Pranab Mukherjee had also made allegations of spying while he was the Finance Minister in the year 2011. Pranab Mukherjee had said that his office should beSusie is being done. During that time the command of the Home Ministry was in the hands of P. Chidambaram. However, the IB later said that there has never been any spying on Mukherjee’s office. A report in ‘BBC’ claimed, LK Advani had also alleged during the UPA regime that he was being spied on.
