More than 20,000 people gathered on Sunday April 25 in Paris, at the call of citizen collectives and representatives of the Jewish community, to challenge the lack of trial after the murder of Sarah Halimi in 2017, according to figures from the police Department.
This mobilization, which also took place in other cities in France and in Israel, responds to the confirmation, on April 14, by the Court of Cassation, of the criminal irresponsibility of the murderer of the Jewish sexagenarian killed in 2017 in Paris, hospitalized in psychiatry since this crime.
The highest court of the judiciary confirmed the anti-Semitic nature of the crime, but confirmed the impossibility of trying the murderer, given the abolition of his discernment during the facts.
This sparked a heated debate on the criminal liability of people with psychiatric disorders on the background of drug use, and President Emmanuel Macron called for “A change in the law”.
A street will bear his name
The socialist mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, participated in the rally. She announced that a street in the capital would be named after Sarah Halimi:
“A street will bear the name of Sarah Halimi in Paris, it is a project on which we will obviously work with the family, but Sarah’s name will appear in our Parisian streets”, declared the city councilor on BFMTV.
“It will also be a way to do him justice, not to bring him back his life, but to do him justice.” (…) This crime must be judged. I think we need a new law and that this law is called Sarah Halimi. “
The mayor of Paris stressed that “Anti-Semitism is a plague, it is a scourge which undermines the foundations of our Republic” and that the “Responsible people carry this message with determination”.
The president of Licra (International League against Racism and Anti-Semitism) Mario Stasi had asked that a street in Paris be named after Sarah Halimi, after the decision of the Court of Cassation.
