Other viable planetary ruins are found in the Solar System

The mysterious debris is evidence that another planet that once had an ocean and an Earth-like life might be littering… the moon.

New research from Yale University (USA) said that ancient collisions may have caused many debris from the surface of Venus to be blown up and scattered with the Earth’s moon. In particular, these debris will preserve the integrity of the chemical traces of the planet’s time with an ocean and a low-mass atmosphere, suitable for life.

The two main authors, Dr. Samuel Cabot and Dr. Gregory Laughlin, said they based on evidence that about 700 million years ago or so, Venus once possessed an atmosphere like Earth, before like the harsh greenhouse effect thickens the atmosphere so much that no rock can escape.

During that period of ancient thin atmosphere, Venus may have suffered quite a few asteroid and comet collisions; because the ancient Earth itself had periods of constant bombardment. Scientists believe Venus has liberated about 10 billion space rocks. These meteors hovered in an orbit that accidentally intersected with Earth and Earth’s moon.

Thanks to that, the gravity of the Earth and the moon has quickly “cleaned” the debris. But finding Venus fragment will be impossible on the vast Earth with vibrant tectonic activities. The moon is a promising site to exploit this kind of interesting ruin.

The planetary fragments will decipher many mysteries in planetary science such as the past flow of asteroids and comets, the atmospheric history of planets and the abundance of liquid water. Therefore, research gives suggestions for future space exploration missions, especially when Venus is a promising destination with unclear evidence of life being revealed. The details have just been published in the Planetary Science Journal.
