Roland-Garros: Serena successfully inaugurates the night sessions

The American played and won against Irina Begu the first match in the history of the tournament in the night session.

Serena Williams successfully opened the nightly sessions of Roland Garros with a victory over Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu (74th) in straight sets 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 Monday night. At 39, the American is still looking for a 24th Grand Slam crown that would allow her to equal the all-time record for major titles held by Australian Margaret Court.

She did not avoid a fright in the first round, after having nevertheless taken the lead 5 games to 2. Begu first glued together, then she served for the set at 6-5, and even procured two set points in the decisive game before the younger Williams sisters got away 8 points to 6.

“It was not easy in the first set, I’m happy to have managed to get out of it,” she commented. Serena, whose shoes are marked “I’ll never stop”, will face another Romanian, Mihaela Buzarnescu, in the second round. The American champion arrived in Paris with only one clay court victory on the clock this season in two tournaments (Rome and Parma).
