Shubham Kumar had topped the UPSC CSE-2020, but his scores were the lowest among the top 10 candidates in the interview. Whereas he had the highest marks in the written examination.
When UPSC-2020 All India topper Shubham Kumar reached his home, he was given a warm welcome. Many people were coming to congratulate Shubham. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar even called his father and congratulated him. Shubham may have topped the UPSC, but in the list of top 10, he had the least number of interviews. Shubham Kumar got 176 marks in the interview. Whereas he got 878 marks in the written examination. Accordingly, his total marks were sitting 1054.
At the same time, Jagriti Awasthi, who secured the second position, got 193 marks in the interview and got 859 marks in the written examination. After this his total marks were sitting 1052. Ankita Jain was ranked 3rd in UPSC CSE-2020. His interview had 212 marks. At the same time, he got 839 marks in the written examination. Accordingly, his total marks were sitting 1051. Please note, the cut off marks are prepared on the basis of GS Paper-1 only. Whereas the qualifying in GS Paper-2 was 33 percent.
How Shubham Kumar used to prepare: In an interview, Shubham Kumar had told, ‘I started preparing for UPSC exam in the year 2018. I have seen many ups and downs in my life. Sometimes I used to lose my courage. But this has been possible only with the help of parents and brother. I used to study only for 7-8 hours. Last time I got selected in Indian Defense Account Service. But I wanted to become an IAS. That’s why I decided to give the exam again.
How important is coaching? When Shubham Kumar was asked about coaching, he said, ‘In 2018 I started taking coaching in Delhi. However, I did not take coaching for long. After that I started studying on my own. Nowadays everything is available online, so preparation for many things can be done easily from here too. But it is very important to work on your strategy. Because following the same strategy is also very important again. Strategy should not be the only objective.
