While the reintroduction of the wolf in France is debated, Ludovic Boukherma and Zoran Boukherma, already co-signatories of Willy 1st, this time introduce a werewolf in the Pyrenees in Teddy. SElected at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, the film hits theaters on June 30. As the recent The Cloud, young French filmmakers are turning more and more to genre cinema, especially fantasy. But success is not always there.
At 19, Teddy borders on sociability, even if his girlfriend sincerely loves him. Wounded by a mysterious creature, the young man is seized with animal and murderous impulses which will degenerate into carnage.
If the plot is a priori dramatic, the tone is second degree, with a good dose of humor and many references to the classics of fantasy cinema. A very French trend, as if the country of Descartes needed to refer to its peers and could not take this genre seriously. There is however potential in this initiatory account of a boy coming out of adolescence who lives in an extrovert form the impulses and mutations of his body.
The mix of genres is also found in the societal theme of the film, dominated by the psychological profile of Teddy, victim of social contempt and ostracism. His transformation into a werewolf is a parable of his out of step with the community with which he is in conflict. But if the bias is respectable, the staging does not follow.
Slow in setting up the plot, with unconvincing performers, you have to wait until the last half hour for the film to take off in the gore in an interesting way reminiscent of the famous Zombie (1978) by George A. Romero. Quite awkward overall, Teddy is in line with this rather muddled approach to the fantastic by young French directors, despite their knowledge and love of the genre.
