New energy vehicle (NEV) sales in the world’s most populous country will increase by 154% in 2021, with a total of 3.3 million vehicles sold.

New energy vehicles (NEVs) include both pure electric vehicles (BEVs) and rechargeable hybrids (PHEVs). According to ZoZo Go, the number of NEVs sold in 2021 is more than 2.5 times higher than the previous year. Specifically, in 2020, there are 1.3 million electric vehicles sold in China, and in 2019 1.2 million vehicles.

According to Seeking Alpha, worldwide EV sales grew 69% in the first 11 months of 2021, with growth in China outpacing the rest of the world.

SAIC takes the top spot with more than 730,000 vehicles, but includes both pure electric and plug-in hybrids. Tesla ranks second and is also one of the few companies that only produce and sell electric cars.

BYD is modestly third, but sales include only electric vehicles. The Shaanxi-based automaker has made an ambitious plan to bring cars to Europe by 2020 with the Tang EV model. Its electric vehicles are already available in Australia and BYD plans to deliver a total of 1,002 electric buses in Bogota, the capital of Colombia, by mid-2022.

In addition to some traditional car manufacturers with sales including NEV and PHEV, there are two notable names in the Top 10, namely Xpeng and Nio – two startups that have stood out in recent times and only produce electric vehicles. The sales of the two airlines are not too different, but Xpeng has the highest increase in the ranking compared to 2020, reaching 263%, while Nio is 109%.

As for Zeekr – Geely’s sub-brand – sales are only counted in 2021, because the company just started delivering cars in October of the same year. Zeekr’s target this year is 70,000 vehicles and will be 650,000 vehicles by the end of 2025.
