Thirteen centuries of devotion

Above Ottrott (Bas-Rhin), this mountain in the Vosges mountains, culminating at 767 meters above sea level, takes its name from the saint who founded her abbey at its summit in the VIIe century. By extension, we call Mont Sainte-Odile the sanctuary.

According to tradition, Odile, blind from birth, miraculously received the light at his baptism. The monastery where his tomb is venerated has attracted pilgrims without interruption for thirteen centuries. Odile is the patron saint of Alsace.

The sanctuary, which has known many vicissitudes became the property of the diocese of Strasbourg again since 1853. Odile is especially invoked for the healing of the eyes, but not only. We take turns in front of the Blessed Sacrament for Perpetual Adoration.

In 2021, we celebrate the jubilee of 1,300 years of “dies natalis” (earthly death, therefore the “birth in Heaven”) of Saint Odile, with a program of celebrations, a pilgrim’s booklet, a “missionary caravan” bringing relics from parish to parish, a night walk… These are also the 90 years of Perpetual Adoration, celebrated at Strasbourg Cathedral on July 4 at 4 p.m. in the presence of Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State. He will also ordain Father Gilles Reithinger as auxiliary bishop of Strasbourg.
