Two cases of the Omicron variant detected in Brazil, the first in Latin America


The government of Sao Paulo, in southern Brazil, on Tuesday, November 30, announced two cases of the new Omicron variant, the first in this country and in Latin America, in travelers from South Africa.

“The Sao Paulo Secretary of State for Health confirmed on Tuesday the first two imported cases of the new Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in Brazil. Confirmation was made after genetic sequencing ”, the Sao Paulo government said in a statement.

The two infected people are a 41-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, who arrived in Brazil on November 23 and left for South Africa on November 25, the statement said.

Several other suspected cases

Another suspected case, that of a passenger from Ethiopia and who had previously visited South Africa, is being examined, said the health authorities of the State of Sao Paulo. Other suspected cases have also been detected in Belo Horizonte (south-east) and in the capital Brasilia.
