Volkswagen’s electric car sales boom in 2021

Nearly 171,000 electric cars of Volkswagen Group delivered to customers in the first 6 months of 2021, more than tripled compared to the same period last year.

Volkswagen Group’s plan to encroach into electric cars continues to be successful in the first half of 2021. The group’s existing electric car product portfolio includes Volkswagen ID.4, Volkswagen ID.6, Skoda Enyaq iV, Audi Q4 e -tron, Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron, Audi e-tron GT and Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo.

If the first quarter recorded nearly 60,000 electric cars of all kinds sold by this group, up 78% over the same period last year, in the second quarter, the number of electric cars sold increased significantly, 111,000 vehicles, up 265% compared to same period last year. Thus, in the first half of 2021, the company sold 171,000 electric vehicles, up 165% over the same period (64,462 vehicles), equivalent to nearly 3 times.

In addition, the number of Plug-in Hybrid EVs (PHEVs) has also benefited from a significant increase in customer demand. 171,300 PHEVs were delivered, tripled compared to the same period last year.

The European market led Volkswagen electric vehicle sales in the first half of the year, with a market share of about 26%. In the US, the group has handed over more than 18,500 electric cars to customers. In China, 18,200 electric vehicles were delivered to customers in the first half of 2021, accounting for 10.7% of the group’s total worldwide EV deliveries.

Volkswagen started selling electric cars in Europe last year with the ID.3 model. This year, the model is followed by the ID.4 electric SUV, which was also launched in the US and China in March. In addition, the ID.6, a custom-designed 7-seat electric SUV to meet the needs of Chinese customers, has been in the country since June.

Volkswagen Group’s electric car models with the highest sales in the first half of 2021:

– Volkswagen ID.4: 37,292 vehicles

– Volkswagen ID.3: 31,177 vehicles

– Audi e-tron (including Sportback): 25,794 vehicles

– Porsche Taycan (including Cross Turismo): 19,822 vehicles
